DO I NEED RETAINERS?

Once the active period of your orthodontic treatment is completed and your braces are removed. The next step is the retention phase. You must wear your retainer as instructed, otherwise your teeth may move toward their original positions and the benefit of wearing your braces will be lost.

But if your teeth are straight now, why do you need a retainer at all? Simply put, it’s because if you don’t wear one, your teeth will start moving right back to where they were! Retention is lifelong as the potential for teeth to move is lifelong.

TYPES OF RETAINERS

new2new1
FIXED RETAINERS:  This type of retainer is especially helpful in retaining cases with severely crowded teeth or to keep large gaps from reopening. Hygiene requires extra attention.

hawleyHAWLEY RETAINERS: Hawley retainers are made from acrylic, with a metal wire that surrounds the teeth. They are very durable and are the most common retainer used by orthodontists.

essixCLEAR ESSIX RETAINERS: The Essix retainer is the most aesthetic type of retainer. It is made of clear durable plastic which snaps into place over your teeth. Clear retainers must not be bleached or placed in hot water as it will cause damage.

To clean retainers use toothpaste and toothbrush and gently brush. DO NOT PLACE IN HOT WATER.

Regardless of the type, retainers are truly as important as braces in the long term results of your orthodontic treatment. Remember: wear them in your mouth, not in your pocket.

Please give us a call if you have any questions about retainer use.
